Text message alerts

How people opt in to ServiceYard text messages, and exactly what they are shown.

The program

ServiceYard alerts are transactional notifications sent by Service Yard LLC, operator of the ServiceYard platform at serviceyard.com. They tell a member of staff about work assigned to them in their own workspace — which job is theirs, and where to open it.

They are not marketing. Nothing is promotional, and nothing is ever sent to a purchased, rented or scraped list. Every number is either entered by the person it belongs to, or recorded by the business that number already deals with, against a consent they were asked for directly. Both routes are set out below.

How someone opts in

There are two, and which one applies depends on who is being texted. There is no public sign-up form in either: a form anyone could fill in would let one person sign up another person’s phone.

Method one — a member of staff, on their own profile

For alerts about work assigned to them inside their own workspace. Only they can do it, and the steps are:

  • The person signs in to their ServiceYard workspace and opens Settings.
  • They type their own mobile number into their own profile. The field is theirs; nobody else can set it.
  • They switch on each kind of message separately. Every one is off until they do.
  • The disclosure below sits directly above those switches, on the same screen.

This is that opt-in step as it appears, reproduced here so it can be read without an account:

Settings › Notifications › Text messages
Mobile number (810) 555-0142
A work order is assigned to me — on
A work order I raised or was assigned is closed — off
A parts request I raised is approved or rejected — off

A Text option appears only where a text sender exists — today that is the assignment alert above. The rest are email and in-app only.

ServiceYard alerts. What you will receive: work order notifications — a text when a work order is assigned to you, and a confirmation text when you send yourself a test from this screen. Transactional only; we never send marketing or promotional texts. Texts are off unless you switch them on, and are only sent for the events above. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help. Terms · Privacy

Method two — a customer, recorded by the business serving them

Some messages go to somebody who has no account and never will: a homeowner waiting on a quote from a window cleaner, a neighbour who borrowed a ladder. They cannot open Settings, so the business they are already dealing with records the consent on their behalf — after asking for it.

  • The business asks the person, in the conversation they are already having, whether they may text them.
  • Only if the person agrees does the business tick the box below, on that person’s record.
  • The box is on the contact’s own record and is off until it is ticked. Nothing is sent without it.
  • What is stored is not just a flag: who recorded it, when, through which screen, and the exact wording they confirmed — copied in, not referenced, so later edits cannot rewrite what somebody agreed to.
  • A reply of STOP outranks all of it, permanently. The box is disabled once a number has replied STOP, and nobody at the business can re-tick it.

This is that box as it appears to the business, with the sentence they are confirming:

Customer record › Text messages
They gave me permission to send text messages to (810) 555-0142 about their work with us: quotes and estimates they asked us for, updates about their job, and reminders about items they have borrowed. No marketing or promotional messages. They were told: message frequency varies, message and data rates may apply, and they can reply STOP at any time to stop receiving them.

Without this we cannot text them. Terms · Privacy

The record is only as good as the business’s assertion, which is why it names who made it. That is the same basis a tradesperson has for phoning the customer who asked them for a quote, written down rather than assumed — and every message still carries the opt-out.

What the messages look like

  • ServiceYard (Acme Manufacturing) WO-1042 - CRITICAL: Rooftop unit 3 not cooling https://facility.serviceyard.com/tickets/1042 Reply STOP to opt out.
  • ServiceYard (Acme Manufacturing) WO-1043 - Replace door closer, Building B https://facility.serviceyard.com/tickets/1043 Reply STOP to opt out.
  • ServiceYard (Acme Manufacturing): text messages are working. You will get these for the notifications you switched on. Reply STOP to opt out.

Stopping them

Reply STOP to any message and they end immediately — also STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END or QUIT. Reply START to begin again. Reply HELP, or write to support@serviceyard.com, for help.

The switches in Settings turn them off just as well, and the number can be deleted from the profile entirely. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply.

Where your number goes

We do not share, sell, or provide your mobile phone number or messaging consent data to third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. It is given only to Twilio, the provider that delivers the message for us. The privacy policy covers this in full, and the terms set out the agreement.
